Galapagos Handicrafts Market on Santa Cruz Island (Mercado Artesanal)

Galapagos Shopping, Santa Cruz Island, Things to Do

While we were sightseeing in the town of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos we found a really nice handicraft/souvenir market.

In Search Of A Unique Souvenir

The handicraft market/Mercado Artesanal is at the waters edge and has a relaxed atmosphere. There are booths set up in two rows with a nice little park-like seating area down the middle.  We walked down one side of the marked and then enjoyed relaxing for a little while on a bench overlooking the water, then we walked up the other side back to the main road. Our daughter had been looking for a plush hammerhead toy and this is where she found it.

She had been searching for her special souvenir in many of the other shops around town but couldn’t seem to find the mixture of love-ability and price that she had in mind. The prices at the handicraft market were a little lower than at the other shops around town.

The vendors at the market were all very friendly and eager to help us find what we were looking for. Drew found her hammerhead plush toy and is very happy with it. I never thought hammerhead sharks could be seen as soft and cuddly, but this one is, it even has a button that when pressed says “I love you, I love you” in a cute voice.

A Beautiful Evening

There was a wide verity of souvenir items at the market, key chains, playing cards, jewelry,  T shirts,  wooden ornaments and much more. We enjoyed walking around the market, it was nice to experience the atmosphere and see some different products than we had seen in other shops.

We were at the market around dusk and felt very safe. Some of the booths were closed but most were open and fully stocked. On the way back to the hotel we stopped for ice cream at one of the restaurants in front of the pier, it was a beautiful evening.

The handicraft market is located between the fish market and the pier on the same side of the road.
