Galapagos For Kids: Tortuga Bay

Galapagos For Kids, Santa Cruz Island

When we were in the Galapagos Islands we went to Tortuga Bay. I think that it is one of my favorite places on Santa Cruz Island.

To get there we walked right from the Flipper’s Hotel and we didn’t even need a taxi! As we walked, we really liked to watch the scenery. There were a few grey trees and green bushes. It was really neat!

Once we got to the entrance (so we could take the path to Tortuga Bay) we came to large rock stairs that we had to climb. It’s a very good thing that they were there, because there was a big, deep hole surrounded with rocks. But the stairs weren’t too long.

Then we came to the little check-in booth, where I got a chocolate fudge ice cream (there are other flavors too). I really liked eating that as we walked the long, brick path to Tortuga Bay. It was really good!

All the way up the path I saw many lava lizards. I counted twenty five! But I am sure there were more lurking in the brush and twigs on the sides of the path.

After we took the path, we got to the white sand beach. This one had very big, rough waves. And there were signs telling us that we couldn’t swim there because it was too dangerous. Then we passed that beach to get to the next, calm white sand beach. This was Tortuga Bay.

Snorkeling at Tortuga Bay

After you are at Tortuga Bay, it is a snorkeler’s paradise! The first time we went, we didn’t even have our masks! But we could see sooo many fish without our gear – just standing in the water. There were also many, many mangroves in the water – it look neat.

The next time we did have our masks, but it was full moon! So if you go two days before (or after) the full moon the water will be very murky. When the water is like that you can’t see anything. But when it is not full moon you can see a lot of fish. I hope that the next time we go, we will go before (or after) the full moon! I can’t wait!

Well that’s the trip to Tortuga Bay. I hope that when you go to the Galapagos Islands, you will be able to go to Tortuga Bay to. It is really pretty and the water is so calm.

Thank you for reading!

Great blog! Do you know why the water is stirred up at the new moon?

Oops!, meant “full moon”, not new moon.
