Galapagos for Kids: The Adventure at Playa Escondida

Galapagos For Kids, Places to See, Santa Cruz Island, Things to Do

Drew Haines is a young Canadian expat living in Ecuador. Learn about the Galapagos from a kids perspective.

One afternoon when we were staying in the Galapagos, we set out to see Playa Escondida. We went with Monica and Bolivar. The boat ride was about 45 minutes. It was really fun! The whole time, I could see a lot of little caves in the rock, it was breathtaking! When we were out a little way, a bunch of birds came out and started chasing us. They wanted our sandwiches.

Then we stopped at a little point made only of lava rocks. There were a ton of sally lightfoot crabs there. And blue footed boobies. And marine iguanas. After we took some pictures we went back to the boat and on to the main beach: Playa Esconida.

Mom was in the water, and I was ready to get in when I heard her scream, I looked over really fast and saw her standing there staring at the water. When I asked her what happened, she said she had seen a big fish, and then she said, “No, not a big fish, a white tipped reef shark”. I’ll tell you, I didn’t get in the water after that! We just walked around the beach (me and mom). But we did see a sea lion, a pelican and a million jillion of mosquitoes. We had to put our beach towels over our heads so we could see!

Dad went snorkeling though. And he saw two sea turtles.

After that, we headed back to the lodge. And guess what? The birds chased us again! It was really funny! And on the way back we saw the most beautiful sunset ever! It was sooo beautiful! And to see the town from the water, all lit up with the lights, it was truly amazing!

When we got back to the lodge, we had a big supper. After that long day of adventure, I was really looking forward to a nice supper and the nice bed!

When we went to Playa Escondida we saw sooo many animals! Here is a list of what we saw:

  • White tipped reef shark (mom)
  • Sea lion (me and mom)
  • Two sea turtles (dad)
  • Pelicans (all of us)
  • Lava Heron
  • Blue footed boobies (all)
  • Marine iguanas (all)
  • Millions of mosquitoes!
  • Sally Lightfoot Crabs

Have you been to Playa Escondida?
