Our entire Galapagos trip was wonderful, but there were a few things that stood out as breathtaking moments. Experiences that, as they were happening, I knew I would never forget. Here are my top five:
My Top 5 Galapagos Experiences
1. Being So Close To The Animals
There were a number of times throughout our trip that I found myself involuntarily saying “wow” because there was an animal so close to me, or someone in my family.
We were followed by a very curious mocking bird on our way to Tortuga Bay. He stayed at a distance of just a couple of branches, either in front of or behind us. Sometimes he would fly down onto the path and hop along just a few feet in front of us.
There were a couple of very outgoing sea lions on the deck. We couldn’t help but stare and smile as they would swim up to the steps, pull their heavy bodies up onto the deck and waddle across to their favorite resting spot. We also enjoyed watching the daily show the Sea lions put on at the local fish market.
On a trip to Playa Escondida we stopped and got off on a little rocky island where there were Blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas. We were able to walk up so close to them! It made for an unforgettable experience and some amazing pictures.
It was also amazing to be so close to giant tortoises, penguins and sea turtles! All of these animals were close to us because they wanted to be. We were in the right place at the right time – again and again. This has a lot to do with going on the right excursions and having good guides. There is something very thrilling about being close to animals in the wild where there are no cages or fences.
2. Exploring A Volcano And Lava Tunnels
Before our trip to the Galapagos I didn’t think I would ever hike up a volcano. When we were standing on the edge of the caldera and the clouds cleared, it was definitely a “wow” moment. We could see down into the volcano!
Walking through a lava tunnel was a first for me as well. It was a strange experience to be standing where hot lava had flowed through the earth. Seeing how smooth the walls were and how large the tunnel was made a real impression on me. The power of natural elements is amazing!
3. Snorkeling With My Daughter
Seeing my daughter snorkel for the first time was a breathtaking moment. She would always go along for the “swim” with my husband and I – but this was the first time she got up the nerve to put on the mask and trust in the snorkel. Being there as she saw the amazing underwater world, was something I knew I would never forget.
4. Swimming in an Earth Fracture
As we were hiking out to Las Grietas I didn’t really know what to expect. I was picturing that it would be something like where we used to go swimming in Canada. Natural pools made by waterfalls.
Las Grietas was very different from anything I had ever seen. A huge fracture filled with crystal clear emerald green water! There was no river or waterfall because it is fed from underground. Seeing it was beautiful and swimming in it was amazing! I could see clear to the bottom, and it was a long way down. See a video of Las Grietas.
5. Being There
We had dreamed of exploring the Galapagos “some day,” so to finally be there was exciting in itself.
The Galapagos Islands are a very special place to us because of being in a kind of lost paradise. It was thrilling to be around animals that had practically no fear of us!
